Bowls Gisborne/East Coast
The Burton Cup celebrated its centenary in style with more than $10,000 up for grabs at the Gisborne-East Coast bowls tournament here in Easter.
Tournament chairman John Heikell said the association received fantastic feedback from the ECT committee. "We were told we had the ‘right recipe' for attracting teams to the event.
"The Burton Cup had previously been recognised nationally as a very competitive tournament, attracting up to 80 teams. We needed to create a motivation factor to increase the number of teams from just 10 in 2008.
"Money from ECT went toward running the tournament, which allowed us to offer a substantial prize purse." The centenary Burton Cup was hailed as a huge success, attracting 37 teams to participate - 18 of those from out of town.
